markitdown is a free online converter that turns files and web content into readable, structured Markdown. It’s aimed at people who want documents formatted so both humans and language models can search, edit and reuse them without having to copy and reformat content by hand.

The tool accepts a wide range of inputs and tries to keep the original structure: headings stay as headings, lists remain lists, tables become Markdown tables, links and code blocks are preserved where possible. Image files can be processed through OCR-style workflows, and you can also supply a public URL to pull a web page into the conversion flow.

  • Supported inputs include PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, HTML, CSV/TSV, JSON, XML, EPUB, Jupyter notebooks, plain text, existing Markdown and common image formats (PNG, JPG, WebP).

markitdown is useful for tasks like preparing documents for retrieval-augmented generation, building a searchable documentation or research library, converting reference material for code assistants, or moving content into Git and static-site generators. There’s no account, no Python or command-line setup — uploads can be drag-and-drop or file-selection, and converted files download with sensible Markdown filenames.
