Privacy Policy

Information we collect

• Account details: your name, email address, and password. Passwords are stored only as a one-way hash, never in readable form.
• Your content: the files you upload and everything you create here, such as folders, articles, ebooks, answer keys, graded answer sheets, comments, signatures, and earlier versions of your files.
• Information derived from your content: to make your files searchable we extract their text, run character recognition on scanned pages and photos, and generate keywords and previews. When you grade answer sheets, we read the marked answers, student ID, and handwritten name from the photo.
• Usage and device information: your IP address, browser and device type, the pages and features you request, when you signed up, and when you were last active.
• Messages you send us: the name, email address, and message you enter on our contact page, so we can reply.

How we use it

• To run the service: store your files, show them to you, and make them searchable.
• To share content with the people you choose, and to publish what you make public.
• To send account emails, such as verifying your email address and resetting your password. We don’t send marketing email.
• To keep the service secure and working: preventing abuse, investigating problems, and understanding overall usage.
• To enforce our Terms of Service.

We don’t sell your information, and we don’t show ads.

Who can see your content

Everything you upload starts private, visible only to you. Others can see it only when you share it with them or publish it. Published content is visible to anyone, including people without an account, and may be found through the public search. Site administrators can see account details, storage use, and activity in order to run the service, and may access content when needed to investigate abuse or a problem you report.

Service providers

We use a small number of providers to run TheWebrary, and they process information only on our behalf:

• DigitalOcean, which hosts our servers, database, and stored files.
• Hostinger, which delivers our account emails.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or others.

Cookies

We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in and to protect forms against cross-site request forgery. Your light or dark theme choice is saved in your browser’s local storage. We don’t use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and content for as long as your account exists. Files you delete go to the Trash and stay there until you empty it. When an account is deleted, its files and their earlier versions are permanently removed from our storage. Usage logs may be kept for a limited time for security and analytics.

Your choices and rights

• You can update your name and password in Settings.
• You can download, unshare, unpublish, or delete your files at any time.
• You can ask us for a copy of your personal information, to correct it (including your email address), or to delete your account, by emailing info@thewebrary.online.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law. Contact us and we’ll help.

Student information

Teachers can upload answer sheets that contain student names and ID numbers. A teacher who does so is responsible for having the authority to share that information with us under their school’s policies and the law. We use it only to grade and organize those submissions for that teacher. TheWebrary isn’t directed at children, and children under 13 shouldn’t create an account.

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including hashed passwords and private file storage. No service can guarantee perfect security, so please use a strong, unique password and tell us right away if you think your account has been compromised.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We’ll change the date at the top, and for significant changes we’ll let you know by email or in the app.
